The Alpenhütehund is a German breed used for herding sheep. They are likely descended from imported Roman dogs crossed with native German dogs. They nearly went extinct when the need for herding dogs diminished. It's possible that they are the ancestors of the Koolie, and Australian cattle herding breed. The most prominent feature of the breed are the ears, which, when erect, are large with rounded tips. The ears can also be semi-erect or dropped. They are 14-18 inches tall and can weigh anywhere from 13-40 pounds. Their coat can be long, medium, or short in length. They come in a variety of colors including black, black and brown, black and gray, blue merle, red merle, blond, and silver. These colors can be solid or with white or tan markings.
The Appenzeller Sennenhund was first described in 1853. They are thought to have descended from Roman war dogs left behind in Switzerland, crossed with local herding dogs. They are versitile dogs, having been used as a cattle, sheep, and goat herder, flock guardian, property guard, cart puller, and avalanche rescue dog. They have a square build, standing 20-22 inches tall and weighing 48-70 pounds. They have a short coat in black or brown tricolor. There are two types of Kelpie - the Working Kelpie, and the Australian Kelpie.
